This was a during a period that I was really into making pegboard and lightbulb sets. All the solid surfaces, including the gold throne, were pegboard. This was a thrust stage and I split the total height of 22 feet and made a set of concentric boxes that was 11 feet high. This was backed by a wall of pegboard that acted as an iris curtain. When the play started the entire set was hanging above the actors, and as scenes progressed various parts of the concentric boxes flew in. At times the entire set was flown in and the performers were viewed through layers of expanded metal. The 11 foot split was reinforced by concentric boxes of hanging incandescent lightbulbs.
