John Fleck was my first Los Angeles boyfriend. This was like 1987-88. I performed with him often as a backup singer and dancer during that period. Venues like The Roxy on Sunset, Club Lhasa, LACE, verious benefits and events.

At some point after our relationship, Tom Dennison at LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, when they were downtown) called and asked if I wanted to light John's show there. I think it was the first offer I received to light a show and Tom was the first person to think of me as a lighting designer. I told him I had no idea how to light a show but he persisted and said try it, so I did. I designed the set and lighting and there was no director, just John and I making a show. We later put on that show at Taper Too and then at MOCA (the Museum of Contemporary Art). I designed several shows with John, including a show we took to the Public Theatre in 1994.

These images are from A Snowball's Chance in Hell, from Taper Too I think. 1992? 1991? I think this is the first show I designed with John. The hanging pars I first used in lighting are shown here. Par 30's and a group of red and blue outdoor flood lights. I found them at a Hollywood harware store and hung them from sockets and black zip cord that I put together.

Me as a backup dancer/singer to John in 1987? I think it was in silverlake at a Stiff Records event. John performed in clubs often and if he did the MacArthur Park number I was in the show. Me and another singer. We'd come out and sing backup and roll John up in a big cardboard cake.

I was a go-go boy in a few clubs then and that was my go-go outfit. Black boots and a black T. I cut the lower part of the shirt off and made it into a tight little tube skirt.

John was and is a fabulous human.
